On Tuesday, June 9, BCC’s Center for Adult Basic Education & Workplace Literacy honored 105 GED graduates. The graduates filed into the Margaret L. Jackson Arts Center auditorium to enthusiastic applause and “Pomp and Circumstance.” Of the 105 graduates six graduates were inducted into the prestigious 3000 club. These graduates scored a total of 3000 or more on the battery of 5 GED tests.
Dr. John Sbrega, President of Bristol Community College, told the GED graduates that each one of them was a winner and he praised them for their hard work and success in passing the GED tests. President Sbrega also called attention to a recent BCC associate degree graduate, noting that she too was in the GED program, graduated, went on to BCC and will be attending Wellesley College in the fall.
A poignant moment during the evening’s event was the presentation of the Diane McMullen Memorial Scholarship. Diane McMullen’s husband, Thomas, and their daughters, Katherine (McMullen) Brandt and Loren McMullen, presented the Scholarship to Tom McDonagh. Tom, a student at BCC, attended the Taunton ABE program where he studied to pass the battery of GED tests. He then enrolled in the “Transitions” program at BCC’s Adult Basic Education and Workplace Literacy program and later enrolled as a full time student at BCC. Tom is actively involved in student life at the college. He is a Student Ambassador and president of the BCC tutor club.
The auditorium was filled to capacity with proud families and friends — more than 500 in attendance all celebrating the spirit of success.
This year the Adult Basic Education & Workplace Literacy program had a total of 492 learners pass the GED. (Not all who pass the GED take part in the graduation ceremony.) For more information about GED classes and testing at Bristol Community College, call 508-678-2811, ext. 2269.
