Why do I need to take the TEAS® Test?
The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS®) is a requirement for application to the Nursing and Dental Hygiene programs at Bristol Community College. The exam is designed to assess a student’s aptitude for success in these programs. TEAS® test scores are used in conjunction with other measures of performance and are not the sole criterion for admission decisions. Higher scores correlate with a higher probability of success in the program. Students who score higher on the TEAS test in comparison to other applicants will be more favorably considered for admission.
All aspects of the requirement for standardized testing are the responsibility of the applicant including, but not limited to scheduling the test, test preparation and the acquisition of preparation materials (if desired), and payment of related fees. Review of completed applications begins each fall for the following fall/spring class and continues until spaces are filled. Applications which become complete after February 1 are not likely to be admitted for that year. Applicants must make sure that they have met the minimal requirements and completed their application (including all supporting documents such as transcripts) by that timeframe.
What is the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS®)?
A computerized scholastic aptitude assessment, TEAS® is used as one component of the selection process for admitting students into the Nursing and Dental Hygiene programs. The goal is to predict those candidates with the highest likelihood of academic success. The TEAS® contains four subtests: Math, Science, English and Reading. All subtests contain multiple-choice items with one correct answer.
The MATH subtest covers whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions and decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, and ratio/proportion. READING covers paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions. The ENGLISH subtest measures knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling. The SCIENCE portion of the exam covers science reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, basic physical principles, and general science. The TEAS® is a 170-item, computerized, four-option, multiple-choice assessment.
