Placement Testing
The Department of Higher Education requires all students entering a degree or certificate program to take placements tests in order to ensure appropriate placement in classes. The tests assess your skill levels in reading, writing and mathematics. The results of the assessment, in conjunction with academic background information, are used by college academic advisors to assist you with course selection.
Testing is offered at the Fall River, New Bedford and Attleboro sites. Non-degree students (those not pursuing a degree or certificate) who wish to enroll in an English or Math course are also required to take the placement tests.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED ON TEST DAY
- BCC 9 digit Student ID Number (begins with 900)
- Your Username and password for accessBCC

Writing, Reading Comprehension, Arithmetic and Elementary Algebra. Except for the Written Essay, all tests are Accuplacer™ Computerized Placement Tests. Each test is adaptive. This means that the computer automatically determines which questions are presented to you based on your responses to prior questions. This technique selects just the right questions to ask without being too easy or too difficult.
Testing Time
The written essay is 50 minutes. The three computerized tests are untimed. Generally students take 2 hours to finish.
Testing Fee
There is no fee for testing.
Transfer Credits
Students who have completed previous college-level coursework in English and/or mathematics may be exempt from all or part of the placement testing. An official transcript should be submitted to the Office of Admissions for evaluation prior to the scheduled exam.
